Fraud Prevention Tools

The Fraud Prevention Tools are a series of merchant configurable options which dictate the criteria before a transaction can be processed.

Blocking BINS

Every credit card has what is called a BIN (Bank Identification Number) - generally the first 6 digits. This is used to identify the financial institution or group a credit card belongs to. CAS Fraud Prevention Tools allow a merchant the option of blocking particular BIN ranges from institutions in an effort to reduce fraud from known risky regions.

Blocking IP Addresses

The Fraud Prevention Tools allow Merchants to block IP ranges from submitting transactions to the payment gateway. This allows a merchant to prevent a fraudster from a risky region using a stolen credit card to submit a transaction through a site. The IP blocker feature also has a range of proxy IP addresses featured.

Limiting Spending

To help minimise fraud, card restrictions can be imposed on cardholders which will allow merchants to limit unregistered or unknown cardholders from spending vast amounts. This can be done in two ways:

  • Restricted Groups - Contain various conditions that cards can be assigned to. For example, how much they can spend before the merchant will contact the cardholder and confirm their identity
  • Flagged Cards - Cards that have been "flagged" by a condition in the group it is assigned to. For example, it will allow a cardholder to purchase normally but will not process the transaction immediately; it will instead be flagged for the merchant to vet and approve before being presented to the merchant's bank

Together these aspects form a system whereby merchants can choose to have suspicious card behaviour flagged, review the flagged cards and associated transactions, and then determine whether to block further transactions.

Other administrative functions include automated group changes based upon how long a cardholder is known to the merchant (i.e. a long-term customer may be allowed to do more transactions than a short-term customer.

Reporting

The Fraud Prevention Tools feature the same online reports as all CAS products but also includes a detailed report for flagged cards which have violated the merchant's rules
